Rome crossroad of Arts between the 17th and 20th centuries (Call for papers)

he Conservatory “Santa Cecilia” in Rome, in partnership with Rome Academy of Fine Arts, the Rome National Dance Academy, Lisbon New University (INE-MD Institute de Etnomusicologia - Centro de Estudos em Musica e Dança), the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), the University of Liège and the Sorbonne Nouvelle University (IRET, Insititut de recherche en études théâtrales) is organizing the International Conference Rome crossroad of Arts between the 17th and 20th centuries to be held from Tuesday 14 until Thursday 16 may 2024.

The conference wishes to study and explore the synergies among Music and various Art forms (painting, sculpture, architecture, theatre, film, dance) in Rome between the 17th and 20th centuries.

This little investigated topic requires an interdisciplinary perspective: the recent studies aim to regard music not as an independent phenomenon, but as part of a whole reality where many others Art forms converge. In Rome the mix of several artistic phenomena is rooted in a special humus, if not unique, and contributes to build a peculiar identity of the city. Many aspects of the topic of artistic crossing in the “Eternal City” need a complete study: how has music been influenced by other Arts (and vice versa)? How have music and other Arts contributed to shape the concept of Rome City? Which Arts have been “osmotized”, creating new forms?

The present conference aims to receive the results of in-depth targeted studies and encourages speeches and reflections within the following topics:

• The “idea” of Rome in the convergence of theatrical, artistic, choreographic and film works;
• Artistic and musical poetics related to Rome;
• Relationship between patrons, musicians and artists in Rome;
• Roman peculiarities in Music, Architecture, Performing arts relationship;
• Connection between Music and Art in Roman churches;
• Interactions between artists “in residence” in Rome;
• Roman topics set to music;
• Music and Audio-visual contents in the Roman production scene.

The deadline for submitting proposals is 15 March 2024. Please submit an abstract of no more than 1500 characters
(spaces included) and a biography (maximum length 500 characters, spaces included) to 2024rca@conservatoriosantacecilia.it. Accepted proposals will be notified by 31 March 2024.

Paper accepted at the conference will be further subjected to a peer review selection in order to be published.

Il Conservatorio di Musica “Santa Cecilia”, in collaborazione con l’Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma, l’Accademia Nazionale di Danza, l’Universidade Nova de Lisboa (INET-md, Instituto de Etnomusicologia - Centro de Estudos em Música e Dança), la Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), l’Université de Liège e l’Université Sorbonne Nouvelle (IRET, Institut de recherche en études théâtrales), promuove e organizza da martedì 14 a giovedì 16 maggio 2024 il Convegno Internazionale di studi Roma crocevia delle arti tra XVII e XX secolo.

L’obiettivo e le finalità del Convegno sono quelle di studiare e investigare le interazioni tra la musica e le altre arti (pittura, scultura, architettura, teatro, danza, cinema ecc.) a Roma tra Seicento e Novecento. Il tema, poco indagato, necessita di un’ottica interdisciplinare anche alla luce degli studi più recenti che mirano a considerare la musica non come fenomeno distinto da altri ambiti artistici ma come parte di un’unica realtà nella quale confluiscono diverse espressioni artistiche. L’incrocio di vari fenomeni artistici a Roma contribuisce a costruire un’identità specifica della città nel corso di quattro secoli e affonda le sue radici in un humus particolare se non addirittura singolare. Molti aspetti legati al tema del crossing artistico nella città eterna attendono ancora una completa ricognizione: in quale modo la musica è stata influenzata dalle altre arti (e viceversa)? In che modo musica e altre arti hanno contribuito a costruire l’idea della città di Roma? Quali arti e in che modo si sono ‘osmotizzate’ creando qualcosa di nuovo? Il convegno, pertanto, accoglie i risultati di studi originali e mira a stimolare interventi e riflessioni intorno ai seguenti temi:

• l’“idea” di Roma nella convergenza di opere musicali, teatrali, artistiche, coreutiche e cinematografiche;
• poetiche musicali e artistiche legate a Roma;
• rapporti tra mecenati, musicisti e artisti nella città eterna;
• peculiarità romane nei rapporti tra musica, architettura, arti performative;
• relazione tra musica e arte nelle chiese romane;
• interazioni tra gli artisti presenti a Roma;
• soggetti romani messi in musica;
• musica e audiovisivi nel panorama produttivo romano.

Le proposte (un abstract di massimo 1500 battute spazi inclusi, accompagnato da un curriculum di massimo 500 battute
spazi inclusi) dovranno essere inviate all’indirizzo 2024rca@conservatoriosantacecilia.it entro il 15 marzo 2024; l’accettazione sarà comunicata entro il 31 marzo 2024.

I contributi presentati al convegno saranno successivamente sottoposti a una selezione attraverso revisione tra pari in vista della pubblicazione.
