Biographie

Viktoria von Hoffmann is a Senior Permanent Investigator (Maître de Recherches) at the Belgian Fund for Scientific Research (F.R.S.-FNRS) and Associate Professor at the University of Liège. Her research examines the cultural, social, and intellectual history of the proximal senses (taste and touch) in the early modern period, with particular attention to how sensory practices around food shaped the construction of gender, expertise, and knowledge.

Her work engages with the history of the senses; the history of medicine, science, and technology; the history of knowledge and experience; and food history. She has published widely on the history of taste, including two monographs (Goûter le monde. Une histoire culturelle du goût à l'époque moderne (2013) and From Gluttony to Enlightenment. The World of Taste in Early Modern Europe (2016)) as well as a co-edited volume on disgust (2015). She later turned to the sense of touch, with recent articles in Renaissance Quarterly and Early Science and Medicine that examine haptic knowledge and experiences in Italian Renaissance anatomy. She has also co-edited a special issue of Arts et Savoirs on "Picturing the Senses," reflecting her interest in the visual and material dimensions of sensory history.

She has directed the MIS-funded project Female Anatomists. A Gendered Perspective of Sensory Expertise in Northern Italian Cities (1550-1700) (F.R.S-FNRS Incentive Grant for Scientific Research n° F.4544.23, 2023-2025) and currently co-leads, with Alessandro Laverda and Alessandra Quaranta, the PDR-SH project Sensing Gender in Early Modern Italy: Women, Expertise, and the Senses in the Medical, Religious, and Legal Contexts (ULiège, 2025-2028). Most recently, she has been awarded an ERC Consolidator Grant for PROXISENSES - Entangled Histories of the Proximal Senses (1350-1650). A Mediterranean History of (Subjective) Knowledge (n° 101171391, 2025-2030), a project that brings together her research on taste and touch while extending it into new conceptual, chronological, and geographical directions.
